Mrs. Sam Herbert of Ranier began her new duties in the business of The Daily Journal today. She replaces Mrs. A. Orvalla who resigned effective May 15.

Carol Sartain, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Sartain of Littlefork, has been chosen as the Littlefork representative at the Girls State sessions to be held in St. Paul in June.

Mrs. James Bush, 607 Seventh St., has received word that her son, Duane, who is a senior at the University of Minnesota, and majoring in industrial arts, has received a “B-plus” average for the winter quarter.

Mitch Skeim broke his own school record for the shot put at Minneapolis last week. The Falls senior threw the shot 49 feet, 11 inches.

A daughter was born yesterday at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Miller, Island View Route, weight, 7 pounds, 13 ounces.

Sergeant First Class Clayton Briggs, South International Falls, arrived in the United States Monday after 17 months of army service in Korea.

Theodore (Dick) Thompson, son of Ted Thompson, was inducted into the army at Des Moines, Iowa. He is a graduate of Falls High School and formerly made his home here with his aunt, Miss Alice Thompson, 601 Sixth St.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Max Kalar, South International Falls, weight, 9 pounds, 1 ounce.

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Oachs, 610 Eighth Ave., announce the birth of a son April 22 at the Littlefork Hospital.

Miss Ann Havluck was guest of honor at a surprise birthday party at the Palm Gardens. Hostesses were Miss Dorothy Mickelson and Mrs. Dan O’Handley.

Bill Corrin left this morning for Minneapolis where he will be inducted in the U.S. Navy. He was accompanied to Eveleth by his father, C.E. Corrin.

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Owen (Alice Teich), 413 Third St., are parents of a daughter born yesterday at the Laurion Maternity Home. Mr. Owen is manager of the Coast-to-Coast store.
