25 YEARS AGO

Area students named to the honor list at Thief River Falls Area Vocational-Technical Institute were Charles Hoppe, Kelly Steele, Peter Battalion, Chris Cantrell, Carrie Ferguson and Sheila Zirups. Named to the director’s list were Jerry Pullar and Jill Falk.

Second Lt. Scott Portugue completed U.S. Army Ranger School and graduated April 2 at Fort Benning, Ga.

40 YEARS AGO

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Otis Setser.

Miss Roberta Chute, Ray, returned home from a 10-day tour of Hawaii. She and three classmates of Bemidji State College made the trip together. They were Karen Kalstad, Julie Lucachick and Shirley Sampson, all of the Falls.

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. John Fraik, 5 pounds, 1 ounce.

Hartman L. Brothern, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Smith, was among the students at the University of Wichita, Kan., named to the Dean’s Honor Roll.

Army Pvt. Alvin S. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. Anderson, Route 7, recently was assigned to the newly-activated 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

Margaret Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rae Hall, 411 Seventh St., was named to the dean’s list at Bemidji State College for the winter quarter.

60 YEARS AGO

Miss Georgian Van Etten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hughes Van Etten, Point O’Pines, Island View Route, who is attending Woodbury College, Los Angeles, Calif., has been awarded the bronze pin of the Phi Gamma Kappa Scholarship Fraternity. To attain this honor, Miss Van Etten had to maintain a high scholastic standing.

A son was born today to Mr. and Mrs. William Halvorson, Ranier, weight, 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Name chosen, Lauren Gene.

Vivian Kay Regal, 16, won first place in the ninth annual conservation essay contest sponsored by the Minnesota Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Robert Nyberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Nyberg, arrived home from Minneapolis where he recently completed a two-year course in mechanical drafting at Dunwoody Institute.

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. John N. Sparks, 1316 Second Ave. E., announce the birth of a daughter today at the Northern Minnesota Hospital. Margaret Jean will be the child’s name.

Marvin Kocinski of Ray was promoted to Staff Sergeant on March 12 and now has 60 men, 24 ambulances, two jeeps, six trucks, six pick-ups and two officers’ cars under his command.

Pat Johnston, Sawmill Addition, received a serious gash in his foot when an ax slipped and struck him. It was necessary to take 11 stitches.

Chris Monson, caretaker at Kettle Falls, came down the lake Saturday. He walked the first 22 miles to Brule Narrows and made the rest of the trip by auto.
