The children of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Johnson (Vega and Bud) request your company at an open house in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary.

SuAnne Sutherland, daughter of Kenneth and Rhoda Sutherland, is a recipient of the Elizabeth J. Larimore and Sadie P. Mathews scholarship to attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for the 1987-88 academic school year.

Winners of the sixth-grade baseball league are the Cubs: Dave Laurion, Neil Sheehy, Howard Nevanen, Mark Pelowski, Dave Ginter, Joe Reff, Randy Hodel, Tony Wiley, Leigh Hart, Peter Tarro and Kevin Johnson.

A girl was born today in Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Germain.

Joel Oustad, son of  Mr. and Mrs. Robert Oustad, 1107 Seventh Ave., recently spent two weeks with his uncle, Bill Budris of Milwaukee, Wis. During his visit he attended a hockey clinic sponsored by the Milwaukee Admirals, a team that Budris plays for.

 

50 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Torgerson, James and Wendy, of French Addition, returned recently from a two-week vacation to Great Falls, Mont., and the Black Hills. While in Great Falls they assisted Mr. Torgerson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hans Torgerson, in celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.

Falls boys Gary Kittleson, Danny Lucachick, Vern Erickson and Richard Price will get the thrill of their life next week when they watch the Minnesota Twins play the New York Yankees at Memorial Stadium in Minneapolis. The boys were awarded the trip for having their names drawn for selling candy last spring.

There will be an open house reception, together with a pantry shower, honoring Pastor and Mrs. Ronald Otterson at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Littlefork Lutheran Church parlors to welcome them to their new home in Littlefork.

A 58-year-old Falls man and his 4-year-old nephew are hospitalized today as a result of being struck by lightning shortly before 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Martin Fischer, 701 Sixth St., is in critical condition and is being transferred today by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. His nephew, Kevin Ice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Ice, Loman Route, is in fair condition in Falls Memorial Hospital and improving.

 

60 YEARS AGO

A daughter was born today to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Thydean, weight, 8 pounds, 5 ounces.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James Sawyer, Loman Route, weight, 7 pounds.

Myron Barnes bought a piece of land in Papermakers Colony across the highway from the place of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nelson.

James Thompson arrived home Thursday morning after working on an Okinawa army base as a civilian office employee for two and one-half years. He will vacation with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Thompson, Loman Route, and does not expect to return to Okinawa.

 

70 YEARS AGO

The White House announced that six of eight Nazi saboteurs had been executed today, the first going to death by the electric chair at noon. The six who paid the death penalty for coming to the United States in Nazi U-boats to burn and blast vital war installations were electrocuted in the District of Columbia jail.

Bud Williams is returning this weekend from British Columbia where he has been employed as timekeeper on the Alaskan Highway construction job.

Frank Bartkowski left this past week for a new job in Duluth.

Celebrating his anniversary, Einar Johnson of Ericsburg was host to members of the Birthday Whist Club.
