Kurt J. Knapp, son of Bernard L. and Lou M. Knapp, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of staff sergeant.

Winners of the Ninth Annual Minnesota Softball Tournament are Mike Grotberg, Tom Anderson, Tim Anderson, Kevin Sather, Bobby Paul, Don Rockstad, Rick Nordlund, Lee Tufvander, Dale Peterson, Bill Peterson, Fred Mishmash and Norman Curran.

New teachers employed by the District 361 school board are Janice Weiblen, senior high school business education and Mrs. Marvin Pearson and Thomas H. Kalar, who will be at Falls Elementary School.

Falls High School students working at Falls Nursing Home under the federal summer Neighborhood Youth Corps program are Vina Mastin, Ruth Mastin, Duane Lindholm, Julie Hart and Theresa Geving.

 

50 YEARS AGO

First Lt. Paul Turenne of the U.S. Army departed by airliner for his new assignment in Okinawa. His wife, the former Marcia Thiele, and children, Cathy, Judy, Tommy, Susan and Paula will make their home at 313 Seventh St. until they join Lt. Turenne in Okinawa.

Of the five Mandonians who recently retired, Patric W. (Pat) Olson had worked the longest for Mando, 38 1/2 years. Pat had been a pipefitter for 38 of those years.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry Foyt, 417 Ninth St., were host and hostess at a steak fry at their home last Sunday afternoon honoring Mrs. Filmore Enger and children of Lodi, Calif.

A reunion of the Blais family was held Sunday in the Ranier Community Building. The potluck dinner was enjoyed by the 103 relatives in attendance. There was water skiing at the Julian Blais residence, Jameson Addition, and planned races for the children at the community building.

 

60 YEARS AGO

Pfc. Robert Lessard, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lessard, 900 Sixth St., is now on duty at an army field station near Fairbanks, Alaska.

Pvt. Clyde William Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Shepard, South International Falls, is now undergoing training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif.

Richard Berryman, 18, son of Mrs. William Sampson, Highway 53, passed his physical examination for entry into the Air Force in Minneapolis this week.

 A new eating place opened in the Falls when Mrs. Isabel Severson and Mrs. George MacDonald began serving meals and lunches at their S & M Cafe at 212 Third Ave. The owners formerly  operated the Quick Lunch at 412 Third St.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Warner Grandaw, 1017 Eighth St., are parents of a son born today at the Northern Minnesota Hospital.

Mrs. A.J. Gordon and Mrs. Harry Hoselton were hostesses at a dinner party at the Hoselton home on Rainy Lake complimenting Mrs. Lyle D. Laidlaw (Ann Carriveau), bride of last month.

Mrs. Gerald S. Hall and son, Michael Craig, of Oshkosh, Wis., were released from Northern Minnesota Hospital today and will spend some time at the home of Mrs. Hall’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. C.C. Craig.

Tuesday evening was an exciting one for Mrs. Lewis Brader and her six children, for they talked to Mr. Brader, a diesel mechanic at the naval base in Newfoundland. Each child, Billy, Robert, Dolores, Ramona, Lois and Patricia, talked a little to their father.
