Bob Nelson captured the Riley’s/Jacob Best match play golf title Saturday at the Falls Country Club.

The newest industry in the Falls sounds fishy, but it will provide the area with at least 15 new jobs. Ice Box Fisheries is a joint venture between Falls businessmen Chuck and Lee Lepper and Koochco Inc., a county economic development agency.

 

40 YEARS AGO

Staff at KICC, the FM radio station at Rainy River State Junior College, are Sue Bement, Gary Reuter, Debbie Glava, Rosanne Walhaug, James Rinne, Gary Lager, Diane Sundin and student manager of the station, Chris Lenz.

Successful bids on the school district’s bread and milk supply were Taystee Bread company at 26 1/2 cents per 1 1/2-pound loaf and Meadow Gold Dairies at a price of 5.89 cents per half-pint.

Alice Beck is employed under the federal summer Neighborhood Youth Corps program and is working at the community library under the supervision of Miss Marie Knudson.

 

50 YEARS AGO

Orchid and green were the colors used in decorating for the bridal shower honoring Miss May Ann Mongrain recently at the Ukrainian Hall.

Pvt. Ronald G. Christensen and Pvt. Kenneth L. Sutherland currently are undergoing advanced training in Company A (Radio School) of the 2nd Training Brigade’s 6th Battalion at Fort Knox, Kent.

Army PCF Harvey G. Long Jr., whose parents live on Route 7, recently received a safe driver award, while assigned to the 38th Transportation battalion in Germany.

Paying their first family visit in Borderland since their departure 12 years ago are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Waldbillig and children, Francis, Yvonne, Loretta, Danny, Bernard and Norbert, who arrived Monday from their home in Bremerton, Wash.

Mrs. Thomas Hellings, Sterna Apartments, is recuperating at Falls Memorial Hospital following an emergency appendectomy.

Amos M. Hansen, a resident of International Falls since 1927 and Koochiching County coroner from 1930 until 1950, today announced the sale of his funeral home to Walter Cudmore of Virginia.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Gerlach, 918 10th St.; 7 pounds, 4 ounces.

The former Bergstedt Cabinet shop at 500 Second St. is now open under new ownership, operating under the firm name of Dumas and Sundberg Cabinet shop. The new proprietors are Clarence “Swede” Sundberg and Marshall Dumas. They have purchased the shop from Mrs. George Bergstedt.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Milton Zoupas of Ericsburg are parents of a son born at the Laurion Maternity Home today.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Karnofsky of Loman announce the birth of daughter today at the Northern Minnesota Hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Corrin moved yesterday from 429 Fourth St. to a new home at Ranier. The Corrins purchased the Couture home which is located on the river bay. For 22 years they resided on Fourth Street. Mrs. R.C. Shaw and family will live in the residence just vacated.

Gail Dokken, 7-year-old daughter of Mrs. Margaret Dokken, left for Cloquet where she will receive medical attention. The little girl made the bus trip alone.
