New residents on the Beaver Road of Ray are Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Guerton from Edwards, N.Y. They have purchased the Burl Watson farm.

Mrs. Mary Mickelson and William Radosevich tied for first place in the Sweepstakes trophy vegetable class of the recent flower show and both will receive trophies.

Gary Vold of the Falls will be a student teacher at the junior high school in Grand Rapids this fall.

 

50 YEARS AGO

Dick Zauft, of Pee-Kay Aircraft Products, announced today that he has sold his interest in the firm to its founder, Tom Kellner, and has purchased Tang of the North Lodge on Lawrence Lake, 48 miles north of the Falls.

Ranier’s newest business will officially open its doors at 8 a.m. Friday morning. George Erickson’s Laundromat features 16 regular washing machines and one commercial-sized washer capable of a 25-pound load.

Marine Private First Class Jay Ruediger, son of Mrs. Eleanor J. Ruediger of 607 Fifth St., is serving with the Second Battalion, Third Marine Regiment of the Third Marine Division, currently afloat at the battalion landing team of the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.

Carol A. Paulson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Paulson, 817 Ninth St., was among the 19 UMD students who achieved grades of straight “A” during the spring quarter.

Dwight Holmbo recently won a trophy for shooting a 74 in the Junior Open Golf Tournament at Fort Frances Saturday.

 

60 YEARS AGO

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Jackson, Island View Route. Weight, 4 pounds, 15 ounces.

James Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Davis, 520 Eighth St., was honored by 20 of his friends and their mothers at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Pagedas, Newport, Rainy Lake. James celebrated his sixth birthday anniversary.

Mrs. Gerald Wiley, 618 Ninth St., was guest of honor at a stork shower at the home of Mrs. Edgar Terry, 1323 Third Ave. Mrs. Vernon Weum and Mrs. Vernon Skrien were assisting hostesses.

Vernon Holmestad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Obert Holmestad, 1201 Second Ave. E., was operated on for a hernia at Falls Memorial Hospital. He is getting along fine, his mother said. He is employed at Border Motor Sales.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Death came early today to popular Mrs. Lloyd Danielson, 30, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, after a brief illness. The former Miss LaNay Person was a well-known member of the International Falls younger set and was especially esteemed in the Minnesota and Ontario Paper Company organization, by which she was employed for more than five years.

Bernice Wagner, who left Sunday evening for Wadesbora, N.C., was feted at a late supper in the Dutch Room by fellow employees of the Woolworth store.

Ero Laitala has been appointed Mando forester, succeeding Onni Koski, who is in South America in government service.

Misses Lulie and Lizzie Withrow of Withrow, who have visited at the home of Dr. and Mrs. M.E. Withrow, left for their home today. Dr. Withrow, who celebrated his 72nd birthday this week, is reported very much better in health.
