James R. Barkovic, son of Robert and Joan Barkovic, received a master of music degree in piano performance from the New England Conservatory, Boston, Mass.

With 80 percent of the voters showing approval, the Zion Lutheran Church congregation voted at its annual meeting Sunday to build a new church to replace the old one.

40 YEARS AGO

The first Falls serviceman to arrive home from Vietnam since the cease fire is S. Sgt. John P. Eberhart who returned by airline Tuesday afternoon.

Shawn Sheehy, a student at Rainy River Community College, was awarded the Falls Jaycees annual scholarship.

Scouts from Den 5 recently receiving awards were Steven Golnick, bobcat pin, and John Golnick and Tom Liebe, gold and silver arrows. Sherry Liebe received her assistant Den Mother's pin.

Helen O'Brien, secretary to the Mando forestry supervisor, Frank Frederickson, recently took an extended lunch hour and passed her first airplane solo flight with flying colors.

Janet Gail Nyberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bowman Nyberg, is one of nearly 200 Wheaton College (Ill.) students currently on tour with one of the college's musical organizations.

Mrs. Harold Sem, who lost all her possessions in a fire which destroyed her home recently, was guest of honor at a miscellaneous shower recently at the home of Mrs. Ruth Bush, 607 Seventh St.

Greg Selsaas and Joe Doris, veteran Mando millwrights, came to the rescue of The Daily Journal Wednesday morning to repair a broken universal joint that let go Tuesday evening.

60 YEARS AGO

Equipment for adding fluoride in small, safe quantities to the International Falls water supply is installed, has been fully tested and will be ready for use next Sunday, the day the city council has set for the start of the fluoridation program.

Mr. and Mrs. John Sontorovich and son, John Michael, 521 Fourth Ave., plan to leave this week on a vacation trip to Phoenix, Ariz., where the former's father, John Sontorovich Sr., is residing for his health. Sontorovich is the owner of JP Food Mart. During his absence, the store will be operated by Ragner Edds.

Kenneth Hafdahl purchased a new truck for his logging operations.

Two Falls sisters are becoming acquainted with their new sons at Falls Memorial Hospital where they share a room. They are Mrs. Richard Ellison with her son, Lauren, born at 3 a.m. Monday, and Mrs. Lowell Christensen with son, Wayne Allen, who was born at 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Mrs. Ellison and Mrs. Christensen are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Prevost, South International Falls.

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bergsing, Jameson Addition, announce the birth of a son today at their home.

After midnight Feb. 20 until March 1, when rationing starts, there will be no canned fruits or vegetables sold. Frozen fruits and vegetables, dried fruits (not dried vegetables) and canned soups and canned baby foods also are included in the order issued yesterday by the Office of Price Administration.

Gerald C. Oettinger, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Oettinger, will leave tonight for Jefferson Barracks, Mo., to begin training with the Army air forces.

Merlin Holm was the bright star in last night's Crow-Mando hockey game. Merlin scored all four goals as his Crows defeated the Mando Juniors, 4-2, in a Midget League contest on the local rink. He was assisted by two tallies by Bob Goodwin and by Howard Viger.
