Tom Belanger, son of Lynn and Carol Belanger, has been accepted for fall quarter at Southwest State University, Marshall.

Jill Kantos of International Falls is a cheerleader for the University of Minnesota-Crookston Trojan Basketball team. Daughter of Nick and Sharon Kantos, she is a sophomore enrolled in fashion merchandising in the business division at the two-year technical institution.

40 YEARS AGO

Bruce Lagergren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Lagergren, is a pneumonia patient at Falls Memorial Hospital.

A gasoline war which apparently started in a small way about two weeks ago heated up this morning as some major brand dealers chopped prices overnight. And the competition promises to get stiffer with some dealers vowing to cut prices even lower than the 30.9 to 32.9 cents a gallon advertised on the hand-lettered signs this morning.

50 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Woodbridge, 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

Falls High School debate team brought home three wins out of six debates from the Region 7 debate tournament Tuesday in Cloquet. Debating on the negative team, JoAnn Patineau and Mary Lee Peterson won two out of three. Affirmative debaters, Laurie Tone and Marit Kucera, won one of three.

Mrs. Howard Milette was recently appointed to succeed Douglas Anderson on the county Public Health Nursing Board.

Frienda and neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Marshalk are planning a benefit shower on Thursday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Happy Hollow Community Club Hall in Papermakers Colony. The Marshalks recently lost all their belongings in a fire.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Roland Nyberg, 1405 First Ave. W., weight, 7 pounds, 3 ounces. Name chosen, Nancy Lou.

A son was born today at Fals Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Tilander, Highway 53, weight, 8 pounds, 4 ounces. Name chosen, Richard Carl.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Liedtke, South International Falls, weight, 7 pounds, 13 ounces. Name chosen, Rose Marie.

70 YEARS AGO

George Belcourt will leave this evening for Portland, Ore., where he will be employed.

Edward Bachinski will leave Tuesday for St. Paul where he will be employed as a mechanic for the Northwest Airlines.

The 40-word bronze typing pin was awarded to Audrey Sterna and Nancy Headsten recently at Falls High School.

Mrs. Olaf Lyngstad entertained Saturday evening at a birthday party honoring her husband. Eight guests enjoyed a social evening at the Lyngstad home on Rainy River.
