The Mardella McBride Rink took top honors at the International Falls Women’s Curling Club’s All-American Bonspiel. Team members are McBride, Alyce Belanger, Eileen Kirk and Millie Ballan.

Robert C. Staples, who first started working for Boise Cascade in 1966 and has 22 years of service, has recently retired.

40 YEARS AGO

Vivian Ewing, Colin Kantor and Joyce Randolph of the Falls, students at Moorhead State College, have been named to the fall quarter dean’s list by virtue of their scholastic grades.

George Schlieff, athletic director at Rainy River Community Junior College, accepted a check from Terry Thompson, a Voyageur Alumni, to start a scholarship fund in memory of the late Carter Pierce.

Kenneth Neisz, Boise manufacturing supervisor, and Donald  (Jack) Earley, sidings supervisor, have both been promoted to the new position of general supervisor.

50 YEARS AGO

A girl was born today at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, to Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Shepard, 7 pounds, 5 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. Nick Smerika, 913 Ninth St., plan to go to Duluth Sunday to see their granddaughter, Katherine Smerika, 4, who is a patient at St. Mary’s Hospital. Katherine has been hospitalized there since last Saturday when she was injured in a car-pedestrian accident near her home at Riverview Addition.

The new location of Dr. Andrew Roman, veterinarian, is on Route 53, between Memorial Drive and the Airport Road. Entrance on Pleasant View Avenue.

60 YEARS AGO

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cassibo, weight, 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

Harvey Veeder today invited Falls residents to a grand opening of his Gateway Mileage service station located on Highway 11 in Sawmill Addition. Veeder will be assisted in the station operations by Donald Selberg and Roy Johnson.

LeRoy Higgens, 10, fell from a slide on the school playground and fractured his right leg. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Higgens, South International Falls.

While skating during a physical education class, Barbara Adams, 10, fell and cut her lip. Her injury was treated by a doctor but no stitches were required.

70 YEARS AGO

Members of Girl Scout Troop 11 enjoyed a skating party at the rink. Following skating the girls gathered at the Dean Dardis home for refreshments. Hostesses were Gladys Dardis and Mary Jane Reidy.

Mrs. Nyland Olson (Ann Prebil) who was a bride of this month was guest of honor at a shower at the home of Mrs. William J. Anderson, 604 Ninth St.

Pvt. Louis Roeder is a football fan who received the thrill of his life when he had an opportunity to attend the Sugar Bowl game in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.

Mr. and Mrs. Ossie Olson of Craig Apartments were to leave this afternoon for a two-week holiday in Duluth.
