Airman Darren Solvin, U.S. Navy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Solvin of South International Falls, arrived home recently for a 15-day leave.

Machinist Mate Third Class Wayne Christenson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merton Christenson, Riverside Park, recently spent 30 days leave with his family and friends in the Borderland area.

Bronco hockey cheerleaders are Sue Jensen, Mary Veranth, Nancy Blais, Michele Milette, Anne Sheehy and Michele Einarson. The mascot is Amy Armstrong.

The Rev. Gene W. Laramy and his family arrived in the Falls early this week and he will deliver his first sermon as pastor of Faith United Church next Sunday morning.

50 YEARS AGO

Harold S. Sems, 53, lost his life early Monday morning when flames gutted the family residence at  712 Fourth Ave.

Thomas Baker, Richard Gustafson and Jerry Sullivan left this morning for the University of Minnesota. The three spent the holidays with relatives and friends.

It was “Home Town Day” at the Billy Don Allens, Oahu, Hawaii, on Christmas Day. They had as their guests Donald Kockelman, Ronald Skov, Vernon Arney and Russel Graves.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Torfin and son, and Erna Mae Torfin, Minneapolis, spent the holidays with Mrs. Mildred Torfin and family.

60 YEARS AGO

Falls Memorial Hospital recorded its first birth of the New Year this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. John Leaf, 408 10th St., became the parents of a son at 1:20 o’clock. The newcomer weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces and has been named John Frederick.

Renee Brunette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vince Brunette of the Falls, is the first member of Mr. Popper’s Penguin reading club, sponsored by the junior room of Falls Public Library, to win an eight-inch felt penguin emblem. Renee read and reported on 10 books on the third grade list of recommended reading, Miss Hanna Rosenberg, junior librarian, said.

This year’s 4-H champion horticulturist in Koochiching County is Jack Karsnia, 16, a member of the Brown’s Corner 4-H Club.

Cpl. Merlin L. Holm of the Falls was junior drill instructor at San Diego Marine Corps recruit depot when his platoon graduated recently from boot training.

70 YEARS AGO

Little Jerry Reeves has been quite ill the past week with stomach flu.

The marriage of Miss Agatha Lindner, daughter of Mrs. Phillip S. Lindner of Sandwich, Ill., to Pvt. John A. Klein, Fort Snelling, son of Mrs. Anna Klein of this city, was solemnized Dec. 31 at the bride’s home.

Leonard LaFave, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.J. LaFave, underwent an appendectomy Saturday at the Littlefork Hospital.

Bert Dutcher, assistant manager of the local J.C. Penney store since September 1940, resigned effective last Saturday.
