City Drug and Falls Drug will stop selling cigarettes in an effort to promote better health, said Andy Anderson, pharmacist and owner of City Drug, and Mick Desannoy, pharmacist and owner of Falls Drug.

John Patterson, son of John E. and Helen Patterson of International Falls, has been selected as the first recipient of the Ely Aire Aviation Scholarship.

Carol Wherley shot a 70 Wednesday afternoon to win the Jewel Box Tournament to beat out last year’s champion, Sarah Johnson.

Little Miss Pageant winners are: Pamela Reeve, Little Miss first runner-up; Jill Arel, LaPetite second runner-up; Bernita Darval, Our Little Miss winner; Lee Ann Prevost, LaPetite first runner-up; and Pam Blumer, Little Miss second runner-up.

Staff Sergeant Anthony J. Etienne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don F. Leggett, of 509 10th St., has been recognized for helping his Strategic Air Command wing earn the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit award.

Word reached the Falls yesterday morning of the passing Miss Alice Thompson, well-known senior library assistant at Falls Public Library.

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Balcolm, 5 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces.

A pink and blue shower was given in honor of Mrs. Alfred Jensen at the home of Mrs. Roy Vigoren.

A boy was born today at La Verendrye Hospital, Fort Frances, to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Maxwell, 6 pounds, 5 ounces.

 

60 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Walter Regal, 1011 11th St., was honored at a stork shower at her home.

Airman Thomas R. Hull, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Hull, 1206 Main Ave., is completing his basic airmen indoctrination course at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Pvt. Robert Rauscher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rauscher, 801 Fifth St., arrived in Japan this week he advised his parents by cablegram.

Airman First Class Robert Zilbert, who has been stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, for 18 months, spent a few days last week at the Tilford Weum home here. Airman Zilbert graduated from Falls High School in 1950.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Following an illness of a month, James Ronald Rompre, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Rompre, 708 Ninth St., died at the Littlefork Hospital Friday afternoon.

The United States Employment Service in International Falls will “close up shop” tomorrow and the full-time staff will be transferred to Virginia. C.A. Lund, local manager, will remain in this city for a week to wind up affairs.

Louis Roeder left for army service.

Delores Barrett is now a clerk in the Mando engineering department. “Dolly” was formerly employed in the logging department.
