Street Commissioner Lee Stone didn’t warn his 30-man crew that he’s hired a young gal to work with them — a tan, blue-eyed, knock-out of a girl that is. Mary Gruidl, 17, was the first female ever to apply for a position with the city street crew. When Stone considered her application, he decided to go to her house to interview her. “I thought it was only proper to meet her mother,” he explains.
A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Carew.
Falls students named to the second semester dean’s list at Concordia College, Moorhead, are Kevin Anderson, Susan Dahl, Robin Foss, Thomas Howard and Kathleen Kirk.

A farewell party for the Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Tetlie, as well as the observance of their 45th wedding anniversary, will be held in Littlefork Lutheran Church parlors on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 o’clock. After having served the Littlefork community for nine years, Rev. and Mrs. Tetlie are retiring.

Martha Kay Emery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Emery, 1011 10th St., was guest of honor at a party Wednesday on the occasion of her 11th birthday. Guests present were Bonnie Bangen, Suzanne Urban, Linda Carlson, Karen Schwankl, Patti Lu Pavek and Mrs. Oscar Anderson.
A 15-year-old border city boy who has been active in Boy Scouting for seven years and who is the recipient of 14 merit badges on Sunday received another high honor in scouting. Bill Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Johnson, 220 Fourth St., received the Ad Altare Dei award. The cross is the highest spiritual award a Catholic Boy Scout can achieve.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Ellsworth, weight, 7 pounds, 14 ounces. Name chosen, Dianne Lynn.
Mrs. John Klow, Riverside Park, is on vacation from her duties as clerk at the Northern Pacific passenger station here. She plans a trip to California. Mrs. Gene Covel is replacing her at the station while she is away.
Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Henrikson of Ray announce the engagement of their daughter, Darlyss Lanette, to William Laurence Samuelson, USN, formerly of the Falls.
Tom Bergstedt, who has been employed as Falls high school basketball coach for the coming year, is in International Falls today looking for suitable housing for himself and his wife.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bigler, 720 Ninth street, announce the engagement of their daughter, Constance Eileen, to Donald Stewart McCutcheon, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McCutcheon of Fort Frances.
Friends of Dr. James A. Mason, former International Falls physician and surgeon, learned today of his promotion to the rank of major in the United States Army Medical Corps.
LeGrange Ballard, who has been in the Navy for the past 14 months, is now stationed at Balboa, Canal Zone, and his brother, William, is in Little Rock, Ark.
James E. Reardon, former proprietor of Jim’s Electric Shop, is now chief electrician’s mate aboard one of Uncle Sam’s sleek destroyers. This is his second hitch in the Navy.
