Karen Nagle has been appointed provost at Rainy River Community College, according to Phil Anderson, president of the Arrowhead Community College Region.

Tera Arnold, daughter of LaReine Arnold of 407 Eighth St., participated in commencement exercises at the College of Saint Benedict May 23. Arnold, an accounting major, was among 360 seniors participating in ceremonies.

40 YEARS AGO

The Light Artillery Company, sophomores, won the GAA softball championship over defending champions Rehn’s Nest. The winners are Nancy Thompson, Teri Brekke, Wendy Green, Marissa Toninato, Linda Vacura, Lisa Kirk, Shelly Walhaug, Renee Tessier, Sue Carlson, Linda Pisa, Mary Robb, captain, Bonnie Glime, Sue Hams, Virginia Lucca and Mimi Clark.

John Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Rogers, former Falls residents, was initiated into the National Honor Society at Oak Creek, Wis., recently.

Amateur stone masons, under the instruction of Andrew Simon, erected a circular fireplace in the center of the theatre lobby at Rainy River State College.

The best actress and best actor awards for the year were awarded Chris Goltelow and Richard L’Heureux by the Community College Theatre at the college awards banquet.

Stanley Norman Louiseau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Louiseau, 616 Seventh St., is a candidate for a bachelor’s degree in music education at the 107th annual commencement exercises of Butler University, Indianapolis, Ind.

Officers and directors of the Koochiching County Historical Society held a luncheon at the Parkway Cafe to honor Mrs. Abe Olson, Lake Kabetogama resident since 1938 and prior to that of Littlefork. Mrs. Olson, instrumental in keeping the society going by her active support, will leave in early June for Long Beach, Calif., to make her home with her sister, Mrs. Charles Berg.

The Rev. Fr. Julian Jalbert, OMI, pastor of St. Columban’s Church, Littlefork, will be honored at a farewell party Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the church parlors.

Stanley D. Hendrickson, Falls Senior High School biology teacher, is one of 32 senior high school biology teachers who have been named to attend a five-week summer institute at the University of Minnesota, Duluth campus.

60 YEARS AGO

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graham, South International Falls, weight, 7 pounds, 10 ounces.

Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Straub of South International Falls were honored guests at a family dinner Sunday at the Gehart Vold home in observance of their 60th wedding anniversary. An anniversary cake was baked and decorated by Mrs. Clinton Schultz and Mrs. Pat Roche.

Mrs. Orville Shortridge, South International Falls, was guest of honor at a stork shower at The Spot on Highway 53.

The recreation commission, meeting Wednesday night, planned the summer playground and beach program. Miss Patricia Enhelder was hired to direct the playground events. Named as lifeguards at City Beach are John R. Culbertson and Eugene Pike.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jurisich of this city announce the engagement of their daughter, Marion Joan Klow, to Jack Strain, L.A.C., Royal Canadian Air Force, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Strain of Fort Frances.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jameson (Betty Jane Hodell), Fifth Street, announce the birth of a daughter today at the Laurion Maternity Home. Gail Marie are the names chosen for the child.

Two Falls sailors who worked together in Erickson Hardware are buddies at Bremerton Navy Yard, a letter to friends here reveals. They are Bill Reff, who joined up in April, and Frank Peterson, who enlisted in January.

Harlan Bigler, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bigler, who has been a Boy Scout for only three years, last night was awarded the Eagle badge at ceremonies in Chisholm.
