25 YEARS AGO

Thanks to a young man from the Falls, chess isn’t just for two players anymore. Brian W. Arch, 20, has taken the game of chess, added touches of checkers and Chinese checkers and come up with a game that is uniquely his own. He recently was awarded a first-place trophy in the category of sports and recreation, at the 30th Minnesota Inventors Congress June 12.

Todd and Dianne Williams of the Falls quit their jobs to begin a year-long journey this Sunday that will take them from Duluth to the Virgin Islands and back on their 29-foot sailboat.

 

40 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rogers, Rogers Route, will be honored on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday afternoon at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Netland, Loman Route on Grabil Road.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Clauson announce the marriage of their daughter, Shirley Anne Sandstrom, to Tomas Wagner of Grand Rapids.

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Richard LeMoine.

 

50 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Taylor, 7 pounds, 6 ounces.

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nash.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Bzdok, Island View Route, were guests of honor Sunday at a 6 o’clock dinner at Rainy Lake Lodge. The occasion was the 35th wedding anniversary of the couple and the dinner was arranged by their four children.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cassibo of South International Falls were guests of honor at a surprise dinner at Island View Lodge Saturday evening in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary.

 

60 YEARS AGO

A frame building, approximately 25x55 feet, was moved this morning from 301 Third St. to a new location south of the IOOF Hall on Third Avenue. The unusual moving operations were in charge of Ole Thompson, veteran house mover. The owner, Frank H. Keyes, plans to remodel the building for store purposes. Woolworth’s will erect a new addition on the former site of the frame structure.

Maxwell Shapiro today reported his store is open for business in the Fifth Avenue quarters formerly occupied by Falls Floral shop. He will carry a stock of confectionery, groceries, newspapers and magazines.

A dinner party honoring Miss Dorothy Klow, who will be married Saturday, was arranged by Mrs. Charles Ketola at Sha-Sha Resort, Rainy Lake. Girls employed at Ketola’s department store, where Miss Klow is a clerk, were guests. The bride-elect was unable to attend because of illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Sulo Koski, proprietors of Sleepy Hollow Cabin Court, today announced they have opened the Sleepy Hollow Coffee Shop for service to vacationers and local citizens. The restaurant adjoins the cabin court at Sixth Street and Highway 71.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Harvey and Michael Thompson, sons of Mrs. Luella O’Hara, 411 Seventh St., underwent tonsillectomies at the Northern Minnesota Hospital.

Mrs. Gus Belcher suffered a fractured arm this morning when she slipped and fell. She was treated at the hospital and allowed to return to her home, 1103 Seventh St.

Mrs. Francis Waldbillig was guest of honor at a surprise shower at the community hall in Papermakers Colony.

Terry Doherty, son of Mrs. R.H. Doherty, is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Bob, and enlisted in the U.S. Marines in Minneapolis this week.
