School District 361 instructors James Turry and James Lemieux both have plans for their retirement from the district. Turry spent 32 years teaching in the district and 20 years were tallied by Lemieux.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holt were Mother’s Day dinner guests of their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Gustafson.

40 YEARS AGO

The International Falls girls’ track team came home Saturday with the Northeast District championship and qualified 15 girls for the State Tournament May 27 at St. Cloud. And Coach Peg Johnson will have 18 girls entered in next Saturday’s regional tourney.

Local students who have been named to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, winter quarter academic honors list are John Ward (straight A), Diane Carnahan and Thomas Murray.

Tim Sheehy, 1972 captain of the U.S. Olympic hockey team and two-time All America standout at Boston College, today signed a multi-year contract with the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association.

50 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Bernice Gedney of International Falls has been selected as the local representative for The Mesabi Sign Company of Virginia, specialists in Neon signs and outdoor advertising signs. Mrs. Gedney was formerly with the Gedney Sign Company and is highly qualified to answer all questions.

Resignation of John Sisco, junior high school speech instructor, was recently accepted by the District 361 school board.

Nancy Ruby has been named president of the Bronkettes, a club composed of Falls High School juniors. Other officers selected are Bunny Sullivan, vice president; Barbara Thramer, secretary; and Linda Baron, treasurer. The queen is Alyce Henrickson and the princess is Virginia Del Pup.

Marcia Holbrook, 18, Falls High School senior, won first prize of $500 in the National Citizens Scholarship Foundation essay contest.

60 YEARS AGO

Joseph Toninato, longtime resident of the Falls who compiled 40 years of service with Mando, passed away early this morning at Falls Memorial Hospital at the age of 66.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Freden, South International Falls, weight, 7 pounds, 6 ounces.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hart, South International Falls, weight, 6 pounds, 15 ounces.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmidtbauer, Eighth Avenue, weight, 5 pounds, 4 ounces.

70 YEARS AGO

Bobby Hodgdon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hodgdon, entertained the boys and girls of his second grade room at a birthday party Friday afternoon at City Beach.

Mrs. Mary Zurick received word from her son, Stanley, today that he had passed the examinations in Minneapolis necessary for his entrance in the U.S. Marines.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holt (Ethel Breneman) of Sunnyside are parents of a son born today at the Laurion Maternity Hospital. Eugene Arthur are the names chosen for the child.

Mr. and Mrs. Anton Eckman, Papermakers Colony, announce the birth of a daughter today at the Littlefork Hospital.
