Navy Seaman Recruit Gary W. Stowe, son of Leonard L. and Lois E. Loveland of Route 9, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Delbert H. Lyons, Insulite grinding room hourly foreman, retired last month for reasons of health after more than 47 years of service with Mando and Boise Cascade.

J. Edgar Hoover, 77, embodiment of the FBI and focus of law enforcement achievement and controversy for nearly half a century, has died.

James Crump, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Crump, 149 Riverview Boulevard, received three first place ratings and two second place ratings at the Rainy River District Music Festival held recently in Fort Frances.

50 YEARS AGO

Duane Anderson, technician at Falls Memorial for the past three years, has resigned effective May 11. He has accepted a similar position at the Chisago Lake county hospital and will move with his wife and daughter to reside in Chisago City.

Al Reller, Littlefork, is carrying a principle role in the Bemidji State College dramatic arts department production of Sean O’Casey’s “Juno and the Peacock,” which opens Saturday, May 5.

Senior girls receiving scholastic awards at Falls Parent-Teacher Association Student Night were: Adrienne Brown, Betty Frederick, Pamela Davis, Diane Keyes, Marcia Holbrook, Maureen Sheehy, Judith Pettis, Gail Anderson, Sharon Frederiksen, Renee Brunette, Marcia Balaski and Carol Miller. Senior boys awarded were James Miggins, Charles Shuff, John Curran, James Ball, Dennis Wold, William Pollard, David Malmquist, Tony Lynch and Richard Gable.

60 YEARS AGO

A farewell party in Nazarene Church parlors honored Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hanna, Loman Route, and Mr. and Mrs. Morris Peterson, Thirteenth Avenue. Mr. and Mrs. Hanna, who have resided at Brown’s Corner for many years, will leave in a few weeks to make their home in eastern Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson and four children plan to leave next week for Seattle, Wash., to reside.

James Crotty, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Crotty, 512 Ninth St., was awarded honorable mention in the recent scholarship program sponsored by the Minneapolis Star and Tribune.

Miss Leila Jepson and Norman Naucler, both of the Falls, were married April 22 in St. Anthyn Park Lutheran Church in St. Paul.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Toninato, 1000 10th Ave., 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

70 YEARS AGO

Effects of the impending sugar dole were already apparent in International Falls as restaurants cut down their allowances. In at least one leading cafe, sugar bowls had disappeared from counters and tables to avert a shortage. Domestic consumers will have to register for future sugar supply during a four-day period beginning May 4.

Mr. and Mrs. Archie Dussault (Elrose Streiff), Crystal Beach, announce the birth of a daughter today at the Laurion Maternity Home. Sandra Kay Ellen are the names chosen for the child.

A farewell party was given for Anton Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thomas, at their home in Bedell’s Acres. Anton left Monday for Fort Snelling.

Transactions were completed today changing the ownership of the Perling grocery store from Mrs. Susan Perling to Conrad Holan.
