Cadet James J. Portugue, son of Gene and Marlene Portugue, was awarded the United States’ Army Superior Cadet Award for being the most outstanding ROTC junior cadet at St. Cloud State University.

Gary N. Pullar of Island View Route has been awarded a bachelor of science degree at mid-year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge.
John B. Klow, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Klow, Ranier, was among the 235 seniors who graduated yesterday from Hamline University, St. Paul.
There will be a 50th anniversary open house from 2 to 5 p.m. for Fred and Lottie Emlaw May 28 at the Gold Room, Rex Hotel.

Pfc. Roxwell R. Hafdahl, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hafdahl, 913 Sixth St., participated in Exercise Mesa Drive, a joint Army-Air Force training maneuver at the Yakima Firing Center.
A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Geno Lucca, 9 pounds, 12 1/2 ounces.
Miss Sharon Growette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Growette of 1112 Seventh St., will receive a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, next week.
Steven Reiners, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Reiners, 1103 Eighth St., for the second time has won the Tuesday Musicale scholarship award to continue his musical studies.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Willmar Anderson, 1127 Seventh Ave., weight, 7 pounds, 5 ounces.
Chet Lind today announced he has resigned as local agent for Century-Matthews motor freight line and will conduct an express and storage battery business of his own here. His headquarters for the time being will be in the rear portion of the Falls Recreation building, Fourth Street.
70 YEARS AGO
Friends here learned of the recent death of Jake Greengaard, pioneer businessman and citizen of International Falls. Mr. Greengaard was proprietor of a men’s clothing store here for many years and he built the Greengaard building which now houses the Ace Hardware store.
Clarence LeBlanc Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence LeBlanc of Holler, fell and broke his left arm while playing.
New Mando store room employees are Charles Metz, Ernest Blake, John Suomala and Alfred Belanger. These men are replacements for men called to Army duty.
P.F.C. William “Bud” Franklin arrived this morning from Panama City, Fla., where he is stationed at Tyndale field.
