Laura Thompson and Ron Mercer were united in marriage at the Falls Care Center on Saturday with Thompson’s grandmother Lorraine Skrumeda serving as matron of honor.

The Rev. Leo H. Buechler, minister of the Bethlehem Congregational Church and later of Faith United Church of Christ, has tendered his resignation as minister and pastor of the congregation.

Larry Rehn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Rehn, Route 7, became a pledge of TIMIA Society recently at the annual Augsburg College Honors Banquet held on the campus in Minneapolis.

The families of Mrs. Martin Longballa and Mrs. K.W. Morris are holding an open house Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Evangelical Free Church at Littlefork in honor of Mrs. Longballa’s 90th birthday and Mrs. Morris’ 86th birthday.

Janet Kopp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kopp, will graduate from the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, on June 3.

James P. Glowack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Glowack, will receive his bachelor of science in sociology during commencement exercises at St. John’s University, Collegeville, on May 31.

St. Thomas grade school children who were winners in the 18th annual Traffic Safety Poster Contest were William Hanson, 8; Ruth Brunette, 12; Nancy Barber, 9; Lynette Ruelle and Lynelle Ruelle.

Winners of the Edward R. Backus and Seymour W. Backus Memorial Scholarships were Mary Lynn Gookins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Gookins, 411 Sixth St., and Dwight Holmbo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Holmbo, 108 Park Ave.

A son was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James Gordon, weight, 7 pounds.

Mrs. Ray Maki was guest of honor at a stork shower at the home of Mrs. Orlando Bakke.

The City of International Falls announces the opening of two on-sale liquor stores — one located in the building formerly occupied by the Palm Garden on Third Street, and the second store is located in the Riverside Hotel, Second Avenue.

Gary Kukas, a 12-year-old sharp shooter with the little round agate, today swept aside all opposition to win the 6th annual city marble championship. The new champ is the son of Mrs. Rita Kukas, 1413 Main Ave.

70 YEARS AGO

Mernsey Monrean, son of Mrs. Grover Monrean of Holler, returned from New Orleans, La., where he has been stationed at the U.S. Naval Reserve Aviation base. Because of trouble with his back, he has been honorably discharged.

Residents of French Addition honored Pvt. Nels Frederickson at an informal party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Roatch. Dancing was the entertainment of the evening. The hostess served a lunch at midnight, after which the honored guest was presented with a farewell gift. Pvt. Frederickson is spending his leave from Fort Snelling by visiting relatives and friends here.

Gunder Nybo, proprietor of Midway Grocery, Jameson Addition, today reported a loss of approximately $2,500 in a fire which destroyed his unoccupied store building in South International Falls.

Miss Evelyn Hoglund, who will be a bride of late June, was guest of honor at a surprise shower at the lake home of Miss Louise Anderson.
