Falls High School sophomore Matt Vold received a medal at the school’s speech awards Wednesday for being chosen first alternate to the state competition in the expression category.

The top three finishers in the local Voice of Democracy contest were John Devlin, Ed Morff and Donald Fuller.

A boy was born May 27 to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Howard.

A boy was born May 28 to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Selander.

Award winners at Backus Junior High are ninth graders Jane Hill, Milton (Mike) Kochaniuk, and Jessie Batdorf. Jane, daughter of the recently deceased Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Hill and now making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gerlach, was voted by her teachers to be the outstanding girl recipient of the Backus Memorial Scholarship Award. Mike, son of Mrs. Sally Kochaniuk, is the outstanding boy recipient. Jessie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Batdorf, received congratulations from school principal Stanley Helleloid for 10 years of perfect attendance.

50 YEARS AGO

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. David Backlund, Ericsburg, 6 pounds, 9 3/4 ounces.

A new distributing branch of the fluid milk and ice cream division of Land O’Lakes Creameries, Inc., has been opened in International Falls at Third Avenue and Fourteenth Street. Distributive branch manager is Richard “Dick” Schuster, 41.

Mr. and Mrs. Lucius Evenson, who recently moved into a new home at 136 Hiway Lane, were guests of honor at a housewarming party Saturday evening. Hosts for the event were Mr. and Mrs. Truman Kolden and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Seegert.

Twin girls were born yesterday at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Nils Anderson, 5 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces, and 5 pounds, 4 ounces.

60 YEARS AGO

It was announced yesterday at the weekly meeting of the ladies section of the Falls Country Club that Mrs. George Amidon and Mrs. A.C. Hanson will be managers of the club house for the summer.

A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Batcher, 1117 13th St., weight, 7 pounds, 5 ounces.

Sgt. Clayton Briggs, who left Wednesday for Camp McCoy, Wis., after a furlough at his home in South International Falls, was honored guest at a party at the Toby Thompson home, South International Falls. He recently returned from duty in Korea.

August, Oscar, Gertrude, Walter, and Lewis Lindvall are enjoying their first reunion in nearly 50 years. Lewis Lindvall, Walla Walla, Wash., is making his first visit here in 24 years.

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Beyer, 808 Sixth St., are the parents of a daughter born today at Hanover Hospital. The child has been named Ann Cathryn.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Macky at their home today.

Mrs. Gust Gustafson was honored by her friends at a surprise birthday party Wednesday. Most of the evening was spent playing touring with prizes going to Mrs. C. Nilsen and Mrs. G. Mills.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Covel of Liberty Addition are the parents of a daughter born May 28 at Northern Minnesota Hospital. The child has been named Carolyn June.
