Joe and Esther Ludwig recently returned from their island cabin on Rainy Lake after keeping a month-long vigil on ice-out at the lake. The couple arrived at the cabin by plane and departed by boat.

The Rite of Confirmation will be conferred Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Mrs. Jeanne Curran is pleased to announce the opening of Jeanne’s Yarn Shop located at 1000 Ninth St. (Formerly Gouin’s and Miller’s Market).
Neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Haponuk are holding open house May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Ukrainian Hall. The Haponuks will be leaving soon to make their home in Aitkin.

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Meyer.
William Cameron, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Cameron, 1322 11th Ave., a student at UMD, came within 35 votes of being elected president of the UMD Student Association following two days of balloting in Kirby Student Center.
Richard Gable, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gable, 806 11th St., was awarded the third International Falls Parent-Teacher Association $200 scholarship at Student Night held in Backus Auditorium Friday night.
Anton Stoppler, immigrant inspector from Antler, N.D., will begin his duties here May 14 at the local port of entry. He replaces David F. Marion who recently retired. Mr. and Mrs. Stoppler and their five children will reside at 724 Fifth Ave.
60 YEARS AGO
Daniel McCarthy Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. D.J. McCarthy, 1006 Second St., is one of 14 ROTC students at St. Thomas College, St. Paul, who have won achievement awards at wing drill.
A daughter was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. George Sutch, Loman Route, weight, 6 pounds, 15 ounces.
Richard Strong, who enlisted in the Air Force last Tuesday, is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Peterson, South International Falls.
Pfc. Alec Katrin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Katrin, 513 Ninth St., telephoned his parents last night from Fort Eustis, Va., where he is stationed. He said he will leave Friday for Newfoundland on a new assignment.

Opening of the Home Beauty Shop at 511 11th Ave. was announced today by Miss Nellie M. Olson, a trained beautician who came here from Fertile.
Prospective Victory Gardeners who had hoped to stake out claims at the Mando garden plot today will have to wait until later in the week. The road into the gardens is in very poor condition and several cars have been mired.
Pvt. Burton Bruggeman, Pvt. John Coran, Pvt. Loren Sartain, Pvt. William Maruk, Pvt. Clifford Sarkiaho, Pvt. John Taschuk, and Pvt. Carl Scheela, who were inducted into the U.S. Army April 27 at Fort Snelling, are spending 10-day furloughs here before being assigned to camps.
Of the 12 awards made in personal typing classes to date, 11 have been sophomores. Sophomores who received awards are: Stella Aasved, Ardis Unke, Mary Louise Hadler, Juel Hartje, Renee Tive, Doris Caple, Myra O’Meara, George Corrin, Mary Elinor Rydberg, Arlene Holm and June Holler. David Shaw is the only senior so far who has won an award.
