The Koochiching County Historical Society board, steering committee and volunteers gave a retirement party to honor Mary Hilke, who is retiring after 10 1/2 years as museum curator.

Ray Nelson of the Falls was honored recently by the Boy Scouts of America’s national office in Irving, Texas, for 50 years of service to the organization.

40 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Frisch.

Molly Sheehy, Karen Stenberg and Catherine Villalta, all sophomores at the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, are among the 172 students named to the dean’s list.

International Falls lost another of its landmarks when the jaws of a giant bucket tore into the building housing Hattie’s Bar, Second Street and Third Avenue.

50 YEARS AGO

Grandma Minnie Morgan’s pet dog, Satan, is missing. Satan, a tiny black and brown Chihuahua, was last seen Thursday tied to the clothes line at the Tish Olson home, 10 East 17th St., with whom Grandma Morgan, 92, makes her home.

“Red Slippers,” a full, life-size portrait, won first prize for Mrs. Gene Ritchie Monahan, border city artist, at the 21st biennial art exhibition of the National League of American Pen Women in Washington, D.C. The exhibition took place at the Smithsonian Institute.

Mrs. Gerald Perron of the Falls was honored at a post-nuptial shower at the Donald Petman home, 112 Hiway Lane.

The championship team in afternoon women’s Polar bowling league competition at Border Bowl is composed of Mrs. Gladys Blanchard, Mrs. Dora Oettinger, Mrs. Sharalyn Schaak and Mrs. Mary Verhey.

60 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. John A. O’Brien, natives of New York City who have resided in Alaska for the past five years, have arrived in the Falls to make their home. They told new acquaintances here that they picked the border country as the most desirable place to live after an extensive study of many localities. The O’Briens have purchased the James Cummings home at Newpport Addition, Rainy Lake.

Miss Phyllis Reimer, Mrs. Gordon Fisher and Mrs. Iver Cassibo were honored guests at a dinner party arranged by women office employees of Mando.

Sherry Owens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Owens, 912 Eighth St., celebrated her second birthday anniversary with a party at her home.

Pfc. Charles A. Thompson of the Marine corps arrived in the city from San Diego, Calif., to spend a 17-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Thompson, 401 Ninth St.

70 YEARS AGO

Clarence Dougherty of Carson-Lupie Addition was guest of honor at a surprise birthday party at his home. Hostesses were Mrs. Bert Frank, Mrs. Clayton Hanson and Mrs. Dougherty.

Donald Berns, 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Berns of Holler, is working hard for the Allied victory by saving tinfoil. Yesterday the lad brought eight pounds he had saved to The Journal office to be turned over to the Red Cross.

Mrs. George Franko was guest of honor at a surprise party at the Ukrainian Hall. Hostesses were Mmes. John Molodek, John Franko, Matt Franko and Harry Kyryluk.

Mr. and Mrs. Bert Sandstrom, Blackstone Apartments, entertained at a party complimenting Vern Gowan who will leave this month for U.S. Navy service.
