The Society of Distinguished American High School Students announced that International Falls students Kellie Maruk, Dana Buchholz and Teresa Sornberger have been selected as members in its honor society for 1987.
Ronald Warren Rising has been awarded a $1,000 Samuel W. Melendy Memorial Scholarship for being a top scholar based on academic performance for the preceding year. Rising graduated from Rainy River Community College with highest honors and is currently pursuing a degree in pharmacy at the University of Minnesota.
40 YEARS AGO
Airman Arthur B. Cassibo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Iver O. Cassibo of 1701 Main Ave., has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training.
John Briggs took fourth place at the Region 8 cross country meet in Hibbing and thus qualified for the state meet in Minneapolis this weekend.
50 YEARS AGO
A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Remillard, 8 pounds, 4 ounces.
Ann E. Eidal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Eidal, 1405 Home Lane, is a member of the largest class in the history of Moorhead State College. Freshman enrollment this fall totaled 867.
Mrs. Christine Christensen, Ranier, returned to her home recently after spending the past five months in Seattle, Wash., Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
The 120-member Range Coaches and Officials Association voted to honor Walt Scheela for his distinguished service throughout the years as a coach, as an official and, in his present position as Falls High athletic director.

One of the largest walleyed pike ever taken from the boundary waters was hooked over the weekend at Sault Rapids by Paul Reuter Sr. The walleye weighed 16 pounds when it was weighed immediately after it was caught Saturday.
Pfc. Benedict Stoltz, 320 Ninth St., is returning to the United States from Korea under the Army’s rotation program after seven months duty.
Duane Lenth, machinist’s mate, fireman apprentice, USN, is taking part in the second of the joint Canadian-US cold weather amphibious assault exercises this month on the Labrador coast.
Mr. and Mrs. James Sedaris of Newport, Rainy Lake, left by car to spend the winter in San Diego. The former owner of the Chicago Cafe and his wife traveled to Greece last winter.

Elmer Oveson who will leave for the Army tomorrow was guest of honor at a farewell party at the Ove Oveson home, Second Street.
Misses Janet Larson, Margaret Lynch and Anna Lou Milligan were joint hostesses at a Halloween party at the Clarence Larson home, 515 Second St.
George Toder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Toder, will leave tonight for Fort Snelling to be inducted in the Army Air Corps.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kyle, 703 Fifth St., are parents of a son born today at their home. Lee Sheldon are the names chosen for the child.
