Alexander Baker-Backus Middle School Seventh Grade “A” Honor Roll — Becky Devito, Laura Hemstad, Tara Jenson, Sage Johnson, Mindy Malenius and Susan Schanus.

The foundation for the largest thermometer in the world was being prepared in Smokey Bear Park this morning.

 

40 YEARS AGO

Janet Raymond, the former Janet Fulford, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ronning of 1107 11th St., recently completed the course in practical nursing at the Eveleth Area Technical School.

The Sunshine Company, comprised of Rainy River State Junior College students Shelly Gorder, Faye Peterson, Lori Braford, Faye Whitbeck, Warner Gouin, Steve Hensel, Rob Polkinghorne, Sue Zeipen, Mark Gow and Nathan Anderson, will present their first concert Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Littlefork-Big Falls High School auditorium.

Koochiching Rebekah Lodge 216 recently conducted the initiation ceremony for the Mmes. James Briggs, Charles Barby, LeRoy Phaklides, Robert Staples and Muriel Tolle.

 

50 YEARS AGO

A boy was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. James Coulombe, Robert Eugene, 7 pounds, 14 1/2 ounces.

A 1961 graduate of Falls High School, James W. Etienne,  died in Falls Memorial Hospital early this morning after succumbing from a gunshot wound in the chest from the discharge of his deer rifle.

Bobby Douglas, 14, shot the first deer of his life, an eight-point buck while hunting with his dad on a logging road off Highway 65 south of Littlefork.

Ron Svir, Leigh Ittner, Burnie Ecklund, Lee Roy Thomas and two southern Minnesota friends of Thomas’ failed to connect on a deer. All veterans at the hunting game, they insisted deer hunting has been “poor.”

 

60 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Palmquist, Richard DeBenedet and Bill Bocnuk returned to the Falls last week from Alaska where they have all been employed.

South International Falls Justice of the Peace Cleve Costley has resigned because of the pressure of his other duties.

Mrs. Kukas of Carson-Lupie Addition entertained at a party in her home honoring her sister, Mrs. Melvin Hall on her birthday.

Lester Carr, 1506 Main St., South International Falls, bagged a buck deer with a massive set of antlers on which he counted a total of 35 points. It weighed 200 pounds.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Milette (Lois Kerr), Keyes Arcade, announce the birth of a son today at the Laurion Maternity Home. Don Leonard are the names chosen for the child.

Ronald James, one of twin sons born to Mr. and Mrs. Anton Piekarski, 13th Street, last Sept. 25, died at the home of his parents this morning.

Otto Welty, Highway 53, is confined to Northern Minnesota Hospital following surgery yesterday.

Rudy Frederickson is now located with the Air Force in Texas.
