Charles Staples, son of Robert Staples, 1607 10th St., and the late Mrs. Charlotte Staples, has been accepted into the National Scholastic Honor Fraternity, Alpha Phi Sigma, at Bemidji State College. He is a senior majoring in geography.
Mr. and Mrs. Iler W. Popejoy Sr. of Littlefork will be honored on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception and dance to be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Cingmars Hall.
Co-captaining the Gustavus Adolphus hockey team this season will be senior Tim Blais of the Falls.

Mrs. Gladys Helps, a registered nurse presently employed at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, has been appointed as supervisor at Falls Nursing Home to replace Mrs. Eileen McAndrews who recently submitted her resignation.
Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Bill (Moses) Balcolm of Elkhart, Ind., will be interested to know that they observed their 25th wedding anniversary on Nov. 19. The Balcolms moved from the Falls to Elkhart in 1935.
Mrs. Hanna Anderson, 612 Ninth St., is leaving the Falls Wednesday to spend the winter months in Minneapolis with her son, Robert LaBlanc.
60 YEARS AGO
Thanksgiving’s severe cold snap in the border region sent the mercury down to 11 degrees below zero, coldest reading here this season. The sub-zero blast came on the heels of winter’s first heavy snow fall which deposited 3 1/2 inches of snow the past 48 hours.
Mrs. Fred Bublitz entertained a group of children last Saturday in honor of her daughter, Joan, who was celebrating her 10th birthday anniversary.
The Simon Michalick family from Blackduck are living in the house formerly occupied by the Glenn Spears family in South International Falls.
Pastor and Mrs. R.S. Persson were honored at a Thanksgiving pantry shower at the meeting of First Lutheran Church Ladies Aid in the church parlors.
70 YEARS AGO
Mrs. Lawrence Sandstrom and daughter, Ella Mae, 11, are confined to Littlefork Hospital suffering from burns they received when their four-room home, Van Lynn Road, was completely destroyed by fire this morning.
Roger Loveland was home a week from school with infection in his hand.
Mr. and Mrs. James Wheeler Valentine returned here this week from a wedding trip to Winnipeg and Pitt. They will make their home in the Greengard Apartments.
Earl Mostad and Gregg Tweeter, formerly employed at the Mando sulphite plant, left for Fort Snelling to enter the Army Air Corps.
