Former International Falls resident Debra L. Nash recently received the Employee of the Year award in the accounting division of El Chico Corp of Dallas, Texas.

Falls High School seniors Glenn Berry, Kristen Bradseth, Sean Gates, Eric Horner, Brenda Johnson and Brenda Ysen have been named “Commended Students” in the 1988 National Merit Scholarship Program and recognized for outstanding academic promise, Principal Gary Alexander announced this week.

Second Lieutenant Robert S. Everley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence L. Everley of International Falls, has been awarded the U.S. Air Force silver pilot wings upon graduation with honors at Reese Air Force Base, Texas.

Army Private Daniel C. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Johnson, 1120 11th Ave., recently completed eight weeks of basic training at the U.S. Army Training Center, Armor, Fort Knox, Kent.

Bob Walker, 47, a native of El Paso, Texas, began his duties this week as chief ranger of Voyageurs National Park.

 

50 YEARS AGO

A girl was born today at Falls Memorial Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Holler, 8 pounds, 14 ounces.

The opening of a new automobile dealership in the Falls was announced today by Mrs. Joe Jones Jr., who is establishing a Chrysler-Plymouth agency to be known as “Plaza Motors.” The new business will be located adjacent to Border Motors, on Fourth Street.

About 40 friends and neighbors gathered at the new home of district forest ranger and Mrs. James Dahlman on Island View Route, Sunday evening. The event was a housewarming for the couple.

Army Pfc. James M. Kurtz, 19, son of  Mr. and Mrs. William Kurtz, Loman, and Army Pvt. Stanley F. Thompson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Thompson, 932 Third St., recently participated in FALLEX, a large-scale NATO exercise in Germany.

 

60 YEARS AGO

Donald A. Fischer, 25, joined the news staff of The Daily Journal.

First employees of the F.W. Woolworth store here who met for a reunion last night are Mrs. Walker Gardner (Mamie Halone), Mrs. Henry A. Hansen (Julia Youso), Mrs. Cleo Cook (Anna Mae Ohotto), Mrs. Tom Savard Jr. (Mildred LaFave), Mrs. Gary Vold (Dorothy Johnson), Mrs. Owen Miggins (Margaret Johnson), Mrs. Gunnar Lindstrom (Pearl Swenson),  and Mrs. Harold Larson (Elna Person). Mrs. James Stone (Gertrude Bussiere) was unable to attend.

Mrs. Mary Langlois, 97, International Falls’ oldest citizen, filled out her absentee voter’s ballot. Although confined to her home, 1017 11th St., she wasn’t going to be kept from supporting her favorite candidates in the Nov. 4 general election.

Bus service will resume Monday in South International Falls, Claude Blais, proprietor of the line, announced. The bus depot will be located in Chet Lind’s place, 308 Fourth St.

 

70 YEARS AGO

Mrs. Ray Kvenbo and children, Kenneth, Darrel, Leola and Sharon, will leave today for Los Angeles, Calif., to join Mr. Kvenbo, who has been employed there two months.

A housewarming party was given for Mrs. Frank Jude at her new home, Carson-Lupie Addition.

Mrs. Howard Severson, who will leave Saturday for Superior, Wis., to make her home, was guest of honor at a farewell party at her home.

Miss Jennie Markow was guest of honor at a costume birthday party at the Ukrainian Hall.
