Mothers in the area will be honored with the Borderland Community Orchestra’s Mother’s Day spring concert, “Say It With Music,” at 2 p.m. May 13 at the Townshend Theatre in Fort Frances.

The program includes a variety of music by the full orchestra is on the including Bizet’s “Carmen” to highlights from “West Side Story” and “Wicked.”

Guest violin soloist Shannon Darby of Devlin, Ont., is scheduled to perform “Concerto No. 5” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, accompanied by the string orchestra. Darby is a music performance graduate of the University of Brandon, Manitoba, and has been a violinist with the Borderland Orchestra for many years.

The string section will also be featured in “St. Paul’s Suite” by Gustav Holst. A brass quintet “The Basement Brass” will be heard in a special selection, “Fanfare from La Peri”.

The orchestra was created 13 years ago under the direction of Katherine Williams of Emo, Ontario. It began as a group of about 30 musicians and has since grown to a full orchestra of more than 50 members who play strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Members are from both sides of the Border, from International Falls and Fort Frances to Baudette and Rainy River. Rehearsals are held weekly at the Donald Young School in Emo, with several concerts presented in the area during each concert season.

Directors of the concert are Katherine Williams, concertmaster of the orchestra, and John Dutton, retired Music Director of Fort Frances High School. Dutton is a member of the trombone section of the orchestra. Douglas Skrief will be Master of Ceremonies.

Tickets are available at Backus Community Center, the Fort Frances Library, from orchestra members and at the door. Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under.
