KAO Staff Report
Caregivers are often asked how their spouse, parent, friend or neighbor is doing. Rarely is the caregiver asked, “How are you doing?”
A new group opportunity is being offered to ask “informal” or “family” caregivers that very question. The group will offer a listening ear and support to individuals who provide care to a family member or friend.
The group, called “Caring and Sharing: A Time for Caregivers,” will be facilitated by caregiver consultant Leslee Loop, program specialist with Koochiching Aging Options. Loop has many years of experience in directing community health programs and support program development and, as a caregiver consultant, works with individuals and families throughout Koochiching County.
“Caregiving can be an emotional roller coaster,” according to Loop. “On the one hand, caring for your family member demonstrates love and commitment and can be a personally rewarding experience. On the other hand, it can be exhausting, worrisome, stressful and often overwhelming.”
Self-care is an essential element of thriving as a caregiver, Loop said. “You take care of the ill or disabled friend or family member, but who takes care of you? Caring for yourself is one of the most important things you can do as a caregiver. When your needs are taken care of, the person you care for will benefit, too.”
One of the greatest sources of information and support can be another caregiver, Loop added, especially as circumstances change over time.
“Caregiving is a like a kaleidoscope that continually changes dimensions with each turn,” says Kristine Dwyer, staff writer for CareGiver.com and Today’s Caregiver Magazine. “Throughout this uncertain journey, receiving support from others may be the one constant factor that keeps you on track.”
Caring and Sharing: A Time for Caregivers meetings, Loop explained, will provide an opportunity for interested family caregivers to take time for themselves, to share experiences, to receive and give support and validation, and to take a little break from caregiving. The group will not focus on a particular illness but rather deal with the range of challenges facing the caregiver. Participants may benefit from presentations and resource sharing.
An informational meeting is planned for 1 to 3 p.m. July 26 at the Fireside Room of Faith United Church. Registration is encouraged. Contact Loop at 283-7030 for more information.
