Dance workout for women is for all levels of fitness

The organizers of a new dance class to be held at Backus Community Center are posing some inquiries to those who are having trouble adding exercise to their lives.

“Have you ever tried to get through a workout tape and couldn’t? Do you love the idea of weights but hate the reality? Are structured exercise classes just not your thing?” ask leaders Francie Nemec-Green and Cynthia Herberg of the Falls.

A “yes” answer to those questions may lead them to a newly formed exercise class which will utilize a series of six Richard Simmons dance routines.

Organizers say participants in the “come-as-you-can” and “pay-as-you-use” low-aerobics workout will learn at their own speed and may step out to rest at any time — as their strength grows.

“Your shape, size, age or current level of fitness will not hold you back,” according to the leaders.

For ages “18 to 101,” anyone who loves music and wants to “dance the winter blues away” can join. There is no registration fee for the open classes and women are encouraged to attend as their schedules allow. The cost is $2 per class and all proceeds will go to the Backus Community Center toward operation costs. Discount punch cards for $10 are available at the Backus office, and allow 12 visits for the price of 10.

“I’m no pro at this at all,” said Herberg, who admits thinking, after seeing the Simmons series on TV one day, “That’s something I can do.” After mentioning it to Nemec-Green, the idea blossomed and the result is the classes which will begin on Monday, Oct. 12 at Backus.

Morning classes will meet from 9-10 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on the stage. Evening classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15-6:15 p.m. as well as at 6:30-7:30 p.m., in Room 209 on the second floor. That presents seven separate opportunities per week for attendance, which may be mixed or matched.

Herberg and Nemec-Green are hoping that many women will decide to get together and dance with their friends and neighbors. Those already in good shape are urged to attend as well. “Hey — sometimes girls just want to have fun,” they proffer.

After that, the only thing the classes will lack is a moniker. A contest will be held for participants in which a name for the workout series will be chosen from submitted suggestions.

Items needed for participation are tennis shoes, loose-fitting clothing, a small hand towel and water.
