A plan on what a group of community members feel should be improved at the Backus Community Center will be presented at 5:30 p.m. April 12 in the Backus dining room.

The plan is based on comments and ideas from a group of 26 community members who in March participated in the first stage of a new strategic planning process.

These “stakeholders” represented local businesses, parents, students, Backus tenants, community agencies, local government officials and citizens. The session was facilitated by Mary Jo Wimmer, who serves as a trainer for the Blandin Foundation.

In response to a question regarding what the stakeholders liked most about Backus, participants mentioned the informal, comfortable, welcoming feeling; the multipurpose use of the building; the variety of activities offered; and that the building feels safe, authentic and positive.

Participants also offered input on what could be improved ranging from the auditorium sound system, parking, signage and a semi-permanent structure for the farmer’s market.

Following the planning session, the 12-member Backus Board of Directors spent two sessions with Wimmer analyzing the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, what needs improving and the group’s mission statement. Stakeholder input is viewed as a key piece of the process and will be used in developing the final strategic plan, according to a statement.

The presentation of the plan is open to Backus stakeholders, board members and the public. A 6 p.m. complimentary dinner will be provided for those attending.

Following the presentation, the city of International Falls and the League of Minnesota Cities will offer a citizen input meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Backus. A release highlights that this “Community Conversation” is an opportunity for members of the community to learn about city services and offer input regarding future city initiatives.
