Plaid shirts and suspenders are the preferred dress code for the Logging Camp Christmas event planned for 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Backus Community Center.

The evening will mark the first-time event put on by Koochiching Aging Options. According to Douglas Skrief, executive director of KAO, the experience is a fundraiser for the organization and will include a dinner, entertainment, raffles, and silent and live auctions with items and services donated by local individuals and businesses.

“It celebrates the county’s heritage and takes advantages of the good feelings of the season,” Skrief said of the event.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards programs and services KAO supports. KAO helps Koochiching County’s older adults live independent, socially engaged and healthy lives in the community. For individuals, their families and friends, the agency offers assessment and planning services, runs support programs, provides resource information and offer links to other service providers.

Although Skrief wanted to keep some of the experience of the lumberjack-themed event a mystery, he did express confidence that those who attend will not be disappointed.

“Jessie Laurion will be leading musical numbers and there will be some surprise guests and some lumberjack humor,” Skrief noted. “I think people will be surprised.”

Skrief added even he doesn’t know the details of the dinner but understands it’ll fit the theme.

“The cooks have told me I better like it because that’s all there is,” he said with a laugh.

A cash bar kicks off the evening at 6 p.m., with the dinner scheduled for 6:30. Tickets are $35 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets are available at the KAO office located in the Forestland Annex at 1000 Fifth Street, City Drug, Bremer Bank, and through board members Jake Jacobs, Sue Fraik, Susan Congrave, Terry Murray, Julie Lepisto, Jane Barthell, Kevin Adee and Cynthia Jaksa.
