The popular melodies to be presented by the Borderland Community Orchestra Tuesday are the kind that tend to replay “inside your mind” (as the “Phantom of the Opera” sings). They’re songs that keep folks humming their timeless strains.
BCO is celebrating its 10th anniversary by performing a Pops Concert beginning at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Backus Community Center.
The community is invited.
This year’s winter Pops Concert will feature “Peter and the Wolf” with narrator Diane Maxey of Fort Frances. Other popular selections included in the program will be “An American in Paris,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “What’s Up at the Symphony,” “South American Overture,” and “Shenandoah.”
String members will perform the tender “A Prayer for Peace,” composed by John Williams for the award-winning movie “Munich.”
The orchestra was created 10 years ago under the direction of Katherine Williams of Emo, Ontario. It began as a group of about 30 musicians and has since grown to a full orchestra of more than 50 members who play strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.
Orchestra members reside on both sides of the border — from International Falls to Baudette and Williams; and Fort Frances to Emo and Rainy River. Rehearsals are held weekly at the Donald Young School in Emo, with several concerts presented in the area during each concert season.
For Tuesday’s concert, Williams is relinquishing her conductor’s baton to John Dutton, retired music director at Fort Frances High School. Williams will be the acting concertmaster. Wayne Barron of Barwick, Ontario, will act as master of ceremonies.
Admission is $10 for adults; and $5 for students. Tickets are available at City Drug and the Backus Office in International Falls; and Betty’s in Fort Frances; or at the door.
Refreshments will be available during intermission.
