More than $1,400 was donated and 270 pounds of food was collected for the Falls Hunger Coalition at the Whispering Pines Quilt Guild’s annual quilt show May 11 and 12.
Guild member Sue Anderson reports that the entry fee to the show along with cash donations brought in $900, canned goods collected amounted to 270 pounds and another $520 earned at the craft sale table will be used to purchase juice for the food shelf, according to the report.
A number of local quilts made by members of the guild and others in the community were displayed for viewing. Visitors to the quilt show participated in a door prize drawing, a block identification challenge, and voted for viewers choice awards in four categories.
The viewers choice awards went to the following quilters:
• In the large quilt category, Barbara Ross took first place, Norma Ulrich took second, and Shirley Simonson earned third place.
• The medium quilt winners were Jody Bedard with first place, Bev Pelland in second place, and Wanda Bublitz with third place.
• In the small quilt category, first place went to Pelland, second place went to Donna LaJambe, and third place went to Katie Valentine.
• In the wearable art category, LaJambe received first place, Sue Anderson earned second place and Bedard got third place.
According to members, guild members make and donate: quilts for Quilts of Valor, an organization that collects quilts for combat service members and veterans; quilts to all infants born in Koochiching County; and quilts for local women receiving treatment for breast cancer.
Any quilter, novice or experienced, wishing to join the guild is welcome to attend a meeting on the third Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church, 1631 First Ave. E. in the Falls.
