Chris Maher will be the featured speaker at Sunday’s annual general meeting of the Rainy Lake Conservancy.
The meeting will take place at 2 p.m. at the La Place Rendez-Vous Hotel and Convention Center in Fort Frances.
The meeting is open to the public and interested people are encouraged to attend.
Chris Maher, a former biologist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, is the regional vice president of the Nature Conservancy of Canada. He has a strong connection to Northwestern Ontario both as a scientist and also as an avid hunter and angler.
The Rainy Lake Conservancy has partnered with NCC on several conservation projects in the past, beginning with Goose Island 13 years ago. Maher will focus his talk on the Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods conservation plan. With input from RLC and other stakeholders, NCC has developed the plan to protect the most important natural heritage values of the two lakes.
Maher will discuss why Rainy Lake and Lake of the Woods were chosen by NCC as Natural Masterpiece Sites in Ontario and about preservation efforts surrounding these two lakes
A short business meeting and election of directors will be conducted and a membership table will be set up to renew memberships for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. Conservancy members will be asked to vote for seats on the board of directors. Each year about one third of the 18 seats on the board comes up for renewal or replacement.
