Many of you will be at the hunting shack this weekend with children. Be sure and take along some reading material to occupy the many hours. Reading is good exercise for the mind wherever you find yourself. Help your children establish good reading habits to last a lifetime.
Many kids prefer or at least go through a stage of reading where they prefer their reading to be informational. They want to read to learn facts. The library has a great collection of non-fiction covering a wide range of reading levels and interests. Here are a few of the newest.
Life in the Ocean by Claire Nivola is a brief picture biography of oceanographer Sylvia Earle who grew up loving plants and animals and studying them. Mrs. Harkness and the Panda by Alicia Potter is a true life tale of one of the first people to successfully bring a panda to the west from China. Ten women explored where even few men had gone and their tales are told in Women Explorers by Julie Cummins.
Sports fans might appreciate A Passion for Victory by Benson Bobrick. This book, while a bit longer, is the story of the Olympics in Ancient and Early Modern Times. Humans have always sought victory and have participated in races and games of contest for thousands of years.
And humans have also sought to trick, confuse, humbug and bamboozle others for years as well. The Giant by Jim Murphy is a great story about the Cardiff Giant, found in a field in upstate New York in 1869 and the media frenzy that resulted in much of America believing that the continent had once been populated by giants.
And for the budding chef, host or even just to practice those budding math skills then here are two new cook books. A World of Tea Parties Just For Kids by Pat Nekola provides great stories, tips, recipes and theme ideas for hosting your own tea party. My Cookbook of Cakes by Laura and Jess Tilli contains 30 tasty recipes with easy-to-follow steps and tips to create marvelous confections.
In closing, here are a handful of new paperbacks to slip into a bag on your way out to hunt. Fangbone: third grade barbarian by Michael Rex, Smells Like Dog by Suzanne Selfors, Eep! By Jake van Leeuwen, Bird in a Box by Andrea Davis Pinkney, Secret Agent Jack Stalwart: The Escape of the Deadly Dinosaur by Elizabeth Singer Hunt and Wildfire Run by Dee Garretson are sure to provide an escape no matter where you find yourself this month.
