‘Tis the season of giving and Borderland pets need something in their stockings, too. While many area pets have plenty of treats and toys, other families struggle to provide basic necessities for their cats and dogs.

The Borderland Humane Society and The Journal/North Star Publishing are again teaming up to collect food, treats and supplies for pets this holiday season. The items will be donated to the Falls Hunger Coalition food shelf to be provided to families in need.

“There are a lot of people out their who need food and supplies for their pets” said Haylee Wimmer of North Star Publishing. “We want to give pets something to put in their stocking.”

Wimmer and several co-workers put a Christmas tree up each year in the lobby of The Journal building.

Robin Ramquist of the BHS called the communities efforts to make donations “wonderful.”

“We forget about the loved ones we have in our family that are our pets,” she said.

Food and supplies have poured in under the tree for the past four years, and it has been well received by those receiving assistance from the food shelf, Ramquist noted.

“Last year, we collected several hundred pounds,” she said.

Wimmer added that she is glad to give back to the pet community and she hopes others will, too.

Ramquist said every year gets “better and better.” She added that the BHS appreciates the commitment of the employees at The Journal and North Star Publishing.

“It is wonderful to see the commitment businesses have for the humane society so we can continue to recognize families with pets,” she said.

Pet food donations should be left at The Journal in sealed containers. Other suggested items are cat litter, bones and treats, toys, food and water dishes, and collars.

Donations can be brought to The Journal office, 1602 Highway 71, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and placed under the tree.

All donations will be brought to the Falls Hunger Coalition, where those in need can receive items for their pets.
