Fighting back against cancer and honoring those who have survived it are the highlights to the importance of Relay for Life.

The annual American Cancer Society-sponsored event is set to begin at noon Aug. 11 at Smokey Bear Park.

Funds raised for the event are given back to the local fight against cancer, said Denae Alamano, community relations for the Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society.

“Koochiching County residents are using the programs and benefits ACS provides locally,” Alamano explained.

In 2011, ACS provided seven local residents free stays at the Hope Lodge for cancer patients undergoing treatment in the Twin Cities; one college youth scholarship to help young cancer survivors to alleviate some of the financial burden incurred by a college education; mileage for a local volunteer to drive cancer patients to their treatments; gas cards went to seven local residents; two locals received low-cost-to-free wigs; and more.

Alamano added that support of the Koochiching County Relay for Life is important because about $35,000 is being used annually in the fight against cancer and only about $23,000 is being raised.

The Aug. 11 event kicks off with opening ceremonies at noon; a survivor recognition ceremony at 2 p.m.; a celebrity pie contest at 4 p.m.; other contests and games at 6 p.m.; the luminary ceremony at 8:30 p.m.; and the closing ceremony at 9:30 p.m.

“The luminary ceremony and survivor lap are always an emotional time for the survivors and their families and friends,” Alamano said. “This year’s survivor lap will be led by bag pipers.”

Alamano continued that everyone’s reason to relay is “as unique as their own personal story.”

She said the event allows people to find healing, comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the disease.

“You have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passionate about finding an end to cancer in our lifetime,” she said.

For those who are unable to attend Relay for Life but would like to make a donation or purchase a luminary bag in honor or memory of someone with cancer, visit www.relayforlife.org/koochichingmn. To register a team, contact Laurie Humbert at 285-3404 or at 218-444-4916.

“No matter why you take part in relay, one thing is clear, with every step you take, you are helping the American Cancer Society save lives,” Alamano said. “With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer, we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or claim another year of anyone’s life.”
