Rainy River Community College graduated 112 students Friday during its commencement celebration.
Families, friends and community leaders filled the school’s gymnasium. Guests cheered as their students’ names were called, signaling the end to another school year and a new chapter for the graduates.
“I challenge you to create a life with greater purpose, fulfillment and satisfaction,” said Sue Collins, president, Northeast Higher Education District, addressing this year’s graduates. “I ask that you move through your life guided by an inspired mind and a compassionate heart, and that you uncap your natural talent, invest intellectual engagement and energy in developing your strengths rather than correcting your deficiencies.”
Degrees or certificates were awarded to 112 graduates — 34 males and 78 females. Four students received more than one degree.
Sixty associate in arts degrees, 39 practical nursing diplomas, 11 industrial technology diplomas, one fitness specialist certificate and one associate in business management degree were awarded during the ceremony.
Twenty students are graduating from both their respective high schools and RRCC through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program. The average age of this year’s graduates is 26. Fourteen students graduated after fall semester.
Also offering words of encouragement to the students were Michael Johnson, RRCC provost, and Jerry Janezich, government relations for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
Rainy River faculty Sue Nordquist and Tom West read the students names and shared information on the graduates, including their hometowns and future plans, as well as the degree or certificate they attained.
RRCC student Crystal Kemboi sang “Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp, summing many students’ journeys through the college process and affirming their success.
Rainy Lake Community Orchestra also provided live music, including the processional and recessional. The graduation celebration ended with a cake and juice reception in the college commons.
