Rock the Border II with local talent tomorrow night

So Nancy McBride comes into The Journal holding her back, moving rather slowly.

Why?

Why else — because the local theater director’s been rehearsing the “zombie” dance from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video — the 1980s graveyard flick often referred to as the most influential pop music video ever.

McBride, and about 19 other people, will be performing the spooky steps as part of Rock the Border II, set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at Backus Community Center.

Over 50 performers are scheduled to provide an evening of community entertainment in the second of McBride-produced rock shows to be rolled out by local talent. The English teacher and drama coach has also been instrumental in producing many other community talent shows.

“I’ve got dancers, singers and musicians and bands in ages ranging from 5 to 85,” McBride told The Journal about Thursday’s show. Doing the math on the number of individuals who have performed recently in different talent shows, McBride marvels, “Just how much talent IS there in this town?!”

Well, she’s recruited enough of it, once again, to fill up almost two hours of musical presentation, and she encourages the community to come out and enjoy this summer variety show.

Just a few of the local entertainers who have thrown their talent into the ring for Rock the Border II are Teresa Rom, Nikki Rom, Scott Roberts, Francie Nemec-Green, Corky Brindos, the Community Band and the group called Faith and the Believers II, featuring brass instruments.

McBride’s son Matt Gilbertson has made the journey to Borderland to be part of his mother’s show. Gilbertson will be emcee as well as sing Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife.” This means a lot to McBride, who says she cries when she hears her son sing.

Those who’ve come to enjoy Brindos’ entertaining should anticipate a Brindos rendition of “Kansas City.” The Community Band is expected to deliver the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann,” and the musical hit “The Power of Love,” as well as the kinetic “Hawaii 5-0” theme song.

McBride said the “big juke box” will be back as will the joyfully received “game show” spoof with audience participation.
