Summer is slipping by fast. If you haven’t stopped in and picked up the children’s summer reading program bag or filled out a bookmark for a teen or adult book, read then, there is still time, but don’t delay.
We just processed a large batch of trade paperbacks. Trade paperbacks are often first time authors, small presses and regional titles. They can be a fun way to discover a new author or explore parts of the country or world you might not know much about. The Bear in a Muddy Tutu by Cole Alpaugh is a story of misfits and what better place for misfits than a traveling circus. Meet Lennon, the newspaper man who rescued Graceful Gracie the runaway bear and Billy, a wannabe cult leader.
The best beach reads take place on the beach and Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax won’t disappoint. Three very different women with nothing in common but co-ownership in a ramshackle beachfront house and on the brink of financial ruin decide to fight back and throw their lots in together. But they all hide secrets and those secrets threaten to tear them apart just when they might make it.
If travel isn’t in your budget this summer, be an armchair traveler. Try The Sojourn by Andrew Krivak and travel from 19th century Colorado mining town to rural Austria-Hungary to the Italian Alps in war. Or maybe South Dakota is more your speed, Death Along the Spirit Road by C.M. Wendelboe is a new mystery series featuring a FBI agent who has to return to Pine Ridge Reservation, his childhood home.
More exotic fare, yet still a mystery, can be found in A Shortcut to Paradise by Teresa Solana. Private detective twins Eduard Martinez and Borja “Pep” Masdeu work in Barcelona and find themselves dealing with the Barcelona literary scene in this title.
Two historical novels with great appeal are A Race to Splendor by Ciji Ware follows life for two women after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and City of Ashes by Megan Chance follows two women after the great Seattle fire of 1889. Both stories deal with rebuilding cities and lives brought to the edge of destruction.
Please note that the library and the Friends of the Library are not accepting donations of used materials at this time. We have been overwhelmed with donations and do not have the space nor the time to deal with anything more. Thank you for your understanding and please do not dump materials for donation in the book drop. We will have to close the book drop if we continue to receive donations there.
Thank you to all who clapped, cheered as we celebrated the libraries centennial as part of the Independence Day parade. We thank you for your support as we spend the year looking back at what the library has done as well as look forward to what we can become in this marvelous community of International Falls.
