The 31st annual Swede Finn Historical Society of Northeastern Minnesota luncheon is planned for 11:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at Grandma’s in the Park in Hibbing.
This group is loosely associated with the National Swede Finn Society. It has no dues and its sole purpose is to socialize with area residents of like backgrounds through the immigration of their ancestors to the United States. The Swede Finn Historical Society of Northeastern Minnesota meets once a year on the first Thursday in August. Guests are welcome.
This year, Finland is celebrating its 100th year of independence.
The gathering will open with a welcome from Jimmie Johnson, Northern Minnesota Finnish Consul.
Guest speaker is Betsey Norgard of Bovey. She will speak on “Tall Ships of Aland that Sailed the World.” She has relatives in Aland and recently returned from a visit there.
Norgard is a member of Finlandia Foundation Twin Cities branch and also serves on the National Board of the Finlandia Foundation. She has been the featured speaker at many other venues.
The afternoon will also have music, opportunities to share personal stories with the group and door prizes. Cost of the luncheon is $16.
Reservations may be made and paid to Art Englund, 14084 County Rd. 600, Pengilly, MN 55775 by July 28. Questions can be directed to Art, 218-885-2741 or Roger Johnson, 218-254-4154.
