You know springtime has arrived when you hear fresh young voices singing lively tunes at the Indus School spring concert. The event, directed by music instructor Stacy Ottemann, took place May 19 in the school commons, featuring all elementary classes and some high school students.

The elementary music included a number of Raffi tunes, such as “”I’m in the Mood,” “Thanks a Lot” and “All I Really Need,” as well as other selections. The senior high choir sang “Colors of the Wind,” “I See the Light” and “Better World,” (by Sonja Poorman).

The concert began with a piano recital and ended with selections by the elementary and senior high school bands: “Irish Dance: Traditional” and BB Rock (by Nicholas Forte).

At intermission, the Student Council recognized volunteers who have helped out at the school during the year: Zelpha Crawford, LaVonne Hasbargen, Audrey Nelson, and Norma Ulrich. Each was given a plant donated by Nicholson’s Greenhouse.

A baked potato supper was served by Family and Consumer Sciences/ProStart students during the evening, and the 16th annual quilt show and mini-craft fair was coordinated by staff member Janet Hasbargen. There were 35 large quilts and 23 other types of quilts displayed in the show.

Katie Valentine won the “Viewer’s Choice” award for her large quilt, “Trip Times Two,” and Maryjo Winkel received the award for the “other” category with her wallhanging entry, “Country Garden.” Each received a gift certificate.
