A local student is a first place winner in North Dakota State University’s first W-Challenge writing contest.
Joe Jessop, son of James and Jessie Jessop, International Falls, won first place in the creative writing category for his project “The Moses Bus.”
Jessop is a graduate student majoring in emergency and business management with a minor in English creative writing.
The contest invited undergraduate students to submit projects with substantial writing components and that could also incorporate visual, audio, digital or other media.
“So many people today say our students can’t (or don’t) write. By recognizing these students and their projects, we are excited to prove them wrong,” said Lisa Arnold, assistant professor of English and competition co-organizer.
“A lot of students are great writers, and the W-Challenge gave them a chance to share their creativity and skill, while receiving tangible rewards,” said competition co-organizer Andrew Mara, professor and upper-division writing director.
Other categories included academic writing, everyday writing, professional writing and foreign languages.
