A dog’s life indeed.

“Jack,” a therapy dog and all-around beautiful yellow lab, was the topic of conversation among the 4-H Cloverbuds as they did a unit on pets Wednesday at the Backus Community Center.

The kindergarten through second graders spent the day taking about dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, turtles and various other species — and learning what it takes to take care of the non-human family members.

The unit on pets — which included a presentation on Jack, pet bingo and making “dog bone” snacks — was one of seven units that the Cloverbuds chose to explore, according to Cloverbuds leader Marcia Glover.

Cloverbuds also had a Thanksgiving tea, made helicopters to learn about aerospace, will learn about music, are currently working on a play called “Cloverbuds is not a Fairy Tale” for a skit contest, will build with Legos, and make crafts.

Jack, who belongs to Koochiching County 4-H Coordinator Melody Poggio, also visited a group of 4-H students preparing for the “Dog Bowl.”

“Dog Bowl” students learn about the anatomy, breeds, health, obedience and showmanship of canines, and will be quizzed on the four-legged companions.

“Dog Bowl” leader Jeff Eibler said that the students are currently preparing for a match in Grand Rapids on March 20. But many of his students are prepared, he said, as they have participated in the contest before and can practically finish, and then answer, the questions before he can read them.

“They’re a fun group to work with,” Eibler said.

The “Dog Bowl” students were asked to name traits of Jack’s breed, point out his body parts, answer trivia about the history of labs and even put him through the paces of commands.
