The Donuts With Dads event on Thursday and Friday morning at Falls Elementary, allows children to invite their fathers, grandfathers or a significant other to a breakfast of juice, coffee and donuts in the school lunchroom.
The kids have a chance to get together with their dads in the morning, when most of them are off working and the kids are on the way to school. It is also a chance for kids to talk about their projects, activities and sports.
“It is just an opportunity for dads to come in and be with their kids,” said Sue Karsnia, an administrative assistant with Falls Public Schools.
The breakfast was prepared by the school food service staff. There is also a Muffins With Mom event held at another time of the year.
The kids gave several reasons why they liked bringing their dads and grandfathers to breakfast. Some said they enjoyed the faster ride to school in the car versus walking, riding the bike or taking the bus.
Others said they like to spend time together because their dads were working early and they were at school and don’t get to have this time together. A few more said it was a chance to talk about their school projects, scouting activities and sports.
Shawn Saeland brought his daughter, kindergartener Kiana, and son Kai, a preschooler, to his first Donuts With Dads event. He also brought his own father, Monty, who said he recalled coming to school with his son for similar events.
Kiana and Kai talked about what they wanted to do after school with dad. Kai wants to walk with dad and look at the neighbor’s horses, while Kianna wants to stay home and help mom.
