Seventh grade students in the life science classes of Tony Casareto, Don Rolando and Chris Hemstad at Falls High School were out Monday and Tuesday collecting insects for their fall entomology project.

The warm days have provided good insect numbers and students have had fun learning collection techniques, preservation methods, and how to display the insects, according to Hemstad. As the days cool down and insect numbers dwindle, students will be using their insect collection to study insect identification, anatomy, body systems, and the important ecological role insects play in the world.

Getting students out of the classroom and into the natural environment is a fun and effective way to build interest in the sciences and foster an understanding of the connections between different life forms, notes Hemstad.
