FWEY

Indus School Report

The Indus School fifth grade class had a rare visit on the last day of school from the hip hop group, FWEY.

The two Haitian brothers from Miami who make up FWEY (which is the Creole word for “fresh”), were in the area visiting the family of fifth grade teacher Leon Ditsch in International Falls, and he invited them to come and to present in his class.

The twosome showed students how to write lyrics for hip hop music and as each child finished their lines, they were given the opportunity to record them. Most students were familiar with hip hop music but found it challenging to write the lines. After each fifth grader (and even a sixth grader or two) finished recording, the piece was played back for them to hear. While waiting around, students watched a video of a promotional photo shoot which FWEY recorded in Miami.

The hip hop performers, whose professional names are Zoe and Zone, have recorded the popular songs, “Rude Boy,” “Take Yo Girl Feat Gucci Mane,” and “Monte Feat Brisco.” They have performed at venues across Minneapolis and Miami, as well other venues on the East and West Coast. They have worked with famous producers Cool and Dre and have opened up for Yg, Rick Ross and P. Diddy.
