The Falls High School National Honor Society has several projects in the coming months that require participation and support from the community.
NHS will hold its first meeting on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the FHS Cafeteria, to begin work on organizing a Cystic Fibrosis Dance-A-Thon that is scheduled for May 23, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ranier Community Building.
There is no admission fee. The dance event is organized as a pledge fund raiser. It will feature music, raffle prizes, and a free pizza dinner.
“This event would raise money for a disease that has no known cure and affects about 1,000 new people per year,” said Anna Remus, president of the NHS. “If you want to be involved, you should come (to Wednesday’s meeting) to sign up and get all the materials you need.”
NHS is also launching several projects that are related to ‘Leap Into Green Week’ at FHS April 20 through May 1.
NHS is hoping to raise environmental awareness and is encouraging students to ride their bikes or walk to school, to reduce emissions. They are also introducing a paper-recycling system to classrooms and placing bottle and can recycling bins all around FHS.
Members are also planning programs at the elementary school to encourage recycling and responsible resource management.
In the community, NHS is raising money to buy energy efficient light bulbs for senior citizens.
NHS will conclude its school-year activities with a ‘Bring Your Own Box’ Camp-out on May 15, in front of the school starting at 6 p.m.
The ‘BYOB’ is to raise an awareness of the poverty in International Falls. The community is encouraged to bring donations until 10 p.m.
“We will be there, with only what we wear on our backs, to accept donations for the food shelf,” said Remus. “We would love any help the community can give, whether it be participation, food donations, or monetary support.”
2008-09 NHS officers include Anna Remus, president; Kelsey Kurhais, vice president; Alex Ringhofer, treasurer. Members working on the projects include: Katie Loop, Stella Fredrickson, Kara Kennedy and Amanda Keeney.
