“Get Excited About Science” is the theme of the 10-week Indus Elementary Science Club which began after school Sept. 18. The group is led by fourth grade teacher Suzanne Mathews, with assistance from technology coordinator Dianne Tillman.
The goals of the club are to instill interest in and appreciation of life sciences through role-playing, games, activities and videos. Planned activities include student role-playing, outdoor plant/insect collecting and labeling, taking soil samples and separating soil types with sieves, and counting different plant species within a specific area. Each Tuesday will have a different theme with an emphasis on outdoor activities as weather permits, as well as interactive videos on a SmartBoard and use of the fully-equipped elementary science laboratory to explore some topics in chemistry.
The series will culminate with a field trip to the Bemidji Science Center on Nov. 13, sponsored by Community Education. A small fee will be charged.
