You may think that the fiftieth day of school is a normal day — not much to celebrate — but not for Kim Brown’s first grade class at Indus School. They celebrated the fiftieth day of school, Nov. 17, by dressing up like they were in the 1950s, with white tee shirts, rolled up sleeves, blue jeans, slicked back hair and ponytails, etc.

Let’s face it — first graders don’t remember the Fifties, and basically, their parents don’t either, except for watching the movie “Grease” and singing along with John Travolta!

So, Brown decided to use this day in class to educate students about the decade and to teach other concepts such as math by counting to 50 with pennies and candy.

Students also had the chance to do some things from the Fifties such as hula-hooping and blowing bubbles. Mrs. Brown says that “They had a lot of fun with it,” even playing limbo and trying root beer floats.

But, most of all, it provided a “teachable moment” to learn about a lot of things around the Fifties theme.
