The Indus School Student Council attended the state convention in Owatonna and Medford high school the weekend of April 6-8.
The theme of the convention was “Lights, Camera, Lead” and featured speakers such as Keith Hawkins of Real Inspiration, Inc. (Relationships, Empowerment, Attitude, Leadership) whose topic was “Go Human,” and Yahya Bakkar, a young man who encouraged students to live life with meaning and to lead by example using these guidelines: Love — everyone around you, Inspire — the people who hate you, Forgive — the people who hurt you, Empower — the people who need you.
The conference included roundtable discussions presented by Student Council members around Minnesota and discussion of issues called “hot topics,” such as “medical amnesty,” which gives young people immunity from prosecution for underage alcohol consumption and possession when they get medical help for someone who has overdosed. The Student Council supported this policy which is being considered by the Minnesota Legislature.
The state service project at the convention, Reducing Global Hunger and Expanding Education, involved packing meals for people within Minnesota who face hunger. The Student Council teamed up with Hope for the City and Rochester Century High School to make this opportunity a reality by obtaining the food and packaging materials. Indus School contributed $336 towards reducing global hunger earlier this year by sending the funds to the “Feed My Starving Children” organization.
The conference also included a banquet and dance as well as an activity night featuring a hypnotist. Awards and scholarships were given out, and Maria Lewis, a senior at Indus School, received an “Officer of the Year” award, while the Indus Student Council Advisor, Lois Lewis, received an “Advisor of the Year” award from the Northeast Division of Student Councils.
